Early Life

Joe grew up in a very loving, but poor, family in rural Kansas. His ancestors settled in America in the early 1600’s. His father was a pastor who instilled in Joe a hard work ethic, integrity, discipline, humility, and respect for others. His mother was a stay-at-home mom who helped raise Joe, his five sisters – including identical triplets – and one brother.  In high school, Joe had an experience with God that changed his life.

Joe was the valedictorian of his high school out of a class of 200+. He graduated in the top 1% of his class from West Point and received a Juris Doctorate from Yale with a majority of honors in his graded credits. In addition to his Law Degree, he also earned a Master’s Degree in Natural Resource Economics from the University of Alaska in one year while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and full time employment.

Combat Veteran

Joe served in the first gulf war, Desert Storm, as an armor officer with the First Infantry Division. Immediately before the ground offensive, Joe’s tank was credited with destroying one of the first Iraqi units to come in contact with his brigade. Because of his commanders’ trust, Joe was chosen to lead his entire brigade’s road-march in preparation for the ground offensive, and then was chosen to lead his battalion during actual combat operations. Due to the high risk of these operations, Joe’s unit was told to expect at least two-thirds casualties. Joe’s tank platoon was also commended for the best gunnery score in the entire First Infantry Division. As an M1A1 tank platoon leader, Joe suffered hearing loss in both ears. For his service, he was decorated with the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and many other awards. His commanders described him as “an aggressive and highly competent combat arms officer,” the “epitome of the combat arms platoon leader,” and “a true warrior leader tested under fire.”

Judicial Experience

At the age of 30, Joe was appointed as a State Magistrate (the youngest then serving in Alaska). Four years later, Joe was appointed an Acting State District Court Judge and, shortly thereafter, U.S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks. Again, he had the distinction of being the youngest then serving in that federal position, not only in the state, but also in the entire nation. Before his appointment as U.S. Magistrate Judge, Joe was subjected to an extensive FBI background check, the same background check that all federal judges, including US Supreme Court Justices, undergo.

Joe’s Family

Joe has an extraordinary family. His wife, Kathleen, is the first natural born American in her family. Her mom (a public educator and Realtor) was born in Austria and her dad (a Vietnam Vet who retired after 28 years of service) was born in England. Kathleen serves on Alaska’s Judicial Council. Joe’s oldest daughter is a missionary with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and is married to a Mexican National who is a fellow staffer (they gave birth to Joe’s first grandchild this past December). Joe’s second daughter is the lead editor for Restoring Liberty, Alaska’s top conservative website. Joe’s oldest son is finishing his final year of studies at the University of Alaska and then moves on to graduate school. Joe’s second-to-oldest son is a second year cadet at West Point. The youngest four children still reside at home and are all martial arts experts. In his extended family, Joe is blessed with brother-in-laws from Indonesia and India.

Small Businessman

Joe runs three small businesses to support his large family, Restoring Liberty (the top read conservative news site for the last three consecutive years), a law office, and a bed and breakfast. He has a middle class income with no inherited wealth.

Joe’s Faith

Joe is a committed Christian who believes that God created people with a free will to make their own decisions regarding what they choose to believe.

Joe loves to hunt, fish, travel, and other outdoor activities. He shot and killed an attacking Kodiak bear at point-blank range while hunting with two of his sons. Joe is an extra-class amateur radio operator (AL0J) who acquired an advanced-class license when he was only 13 years old. He was a first chair symphony violist and is a gun collector who has lived year round in Alaska for over 20 years.

Joe Miller understands the Second Amendment guarantees true freedom for all Americans. His views on gun rights don’t come as lip service to appease a particular single issue group, but from a deeply held belief in the Constitution.
